Understanding the Problem

What is Exterior Wall Waterproofing?

Exterior wall waterproofing is the application of a protective system to the outer face of your building's walls to prevent rain, groundwater, and airborne moisture from penetrating the masonry. In Kanpur, where the monsoon delivers intense rainfall followed by months of dry, hot weather, the repeated wetting and drying cycle causes unprotected walls to crack, stain, and delaminate at an accelerated rate.

The most effective systems combine an elastomeric membrane — a thick, rubber-like coating that stretches across hairline cracks — with a breathable masonry sealer that allows water vapour trapped inside walls to escape, preventing blistering. For walls already suffering from white salt deposits (efflorescence), an anti-efflorescence primer is applied first to neutralise the salts chemically before the membrane goes on.

Proper exterior waterproofing doesn't just stop leaks — it extends the paint life of your building from 2–3 years to 8–10 years, prevents rebar corrosion in RCC structures, and maintains the resale value of your property over the long term.

Signs You Need Exterior Waterproofing

  • White or grey salt deposits (efflorescence) on outside walls
  • Paint peeling, blistering, or bubbling on exterior surfaces
  • Dark damp patches appearing on walls after rain
  • Visible cracks or crazing in plaster or render
  • Algae, moss, or lichen growth on shaded wall sections
  • Interior walls showing dampness after heavy monsoon rain

Our Process

Our 5-Step Approach

Every exterior waterproofing job follows a structured sequence — skipping steps is why DIY treatments fail within a season.

01

Visual Survey

Thorough inspection of all external elevations — identifying cracks, salt deposits, damp patches, algae growth, and failed paint zones across the building envelope.

02

Impact Testing

Hammer-tap testing to detect hollow plaster and delaminated render. Loose material is marked for removal before waterproofing can begin.

03

Surface Preparation

Hacking off defective plaster, filling cracks with polymer-modified mortar, grinding and sanding high spots, and cleaning algae and salt deposits from the substrate.

04

Primer Application

Anti-efflorescence primer applied to block salt migration and improve adhesion of the waterproofing membrane. Two coats over porous or previously affected areas.

05

Elastomeric Coating

Final elastomeric membrane applied in two coats — bridges hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm, remains flexible through Kanpur's extreme temperature swings, and is UV-stable for 20 years.

Specified Materials

Products We Use

Extashield Elastomeric

High-build elastomeric waterproofing membrane formulated for Indian climate extremes. Bridges active hairline cracks and remains flexible from sub-zero winters to peak summer heat.

  • Elongation: 400% at break
  • UV stability: 20-yr rated
  • Coverage: 1 L per 1.2 m² (2 coats)

BreatheSeal Masonry Sealer

Vapour-permeable, water-repellent masonry sealer that allows walls to breathe while blocking liquid water ingress. Ideal for older brick and lime-mortar constructions common across Kanpur's civil lines.

  • Vapour permeable: Yes (SD < 0.1 m)
  • Coverage: 2 L/m² (2 coats)
  • Water absorption reduction: >95%

Anti-Efflo Primer

Penetrating salt-migration blocker applied directly to efflorescence-affected masonry. Chemically neutralises soluble salts before topcoat application, preventing white bloom recurrence.

  • Application: 2-coat system
  • Drying between coats: 4 hrs
  • Coverage: 8–10 m²/L

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does exterior waterproofing affect the final paint colour or finish?+
No. The elastomeric and sealer coats are applied as a substrate treatment, and a standard exterior finish coat (such as Katiyar Ventures Weatherguard or textured paint) goes over the top in any colour you choose. The waterproofing layer is invisible in the final result.
How long does exterior waterproofing last in Kanpur's climate?+
Kanpur's climate is harsh — peak summer temperatures above 45°C, heavy monsoon rainfall (averaging 800 mm/year), and cold dry winters. Our elastomeric systems are rated for 10–15 years under these conditions, backed by a 10-year material warranty. Breathable sealers on older masonry typically last 7–10 years.
Can you treat old buildings with weak or crumbling plaster?+
Yes, but the plaster must be stabilised first. Our process includes hacking off all defective render, repairing the substrate with polymer-modified mortar, and applying a consolidating primer before the waterproofing layer. We have treated buildings as old as 50+ years across Kanpur's civil lines and Swaroop Nagar areas.
What is efflorescence and why does it keep coming back?+
Efflorescence is the white crystalline powder that appears on walls when water carries soluble salts from inside the masonry to the surface. Simply scrubbing it off doesn't fix the underlying problem — the salts return with the next wetting cycle. Our anti-efflorescence primer neutralises the salts chemically and the elastomeric overcoat blocks the water that transports them, stopping the cycle permanently.
