💧 Checking for Moisture Before Painting

Painting over damp walls is the most common cause of peeling paint. Here's how to check moisture levels before you start your project.

  1. 1

    Visual Inspection

Look for dark patches, efflorescence (white salt deposits), or paint bubbling. These are signs of moisture.

  2. 2

    Plastic Sheet Test

Tape a 30cm×30cm plastic sheet to the wall and seal the edges. After 24 hours, check for condensation on the plastic — moisture is present if water droplets form on the inside.

  3. 3

    Digital Moisture Meter

For accuracy, use a pin-type or pinless moisture meter. Acceptable reading: below 15%. If above 15%, treat before painting.

  4. 4

    Check the Source

Rising damp comes from the floor; lateral damp from rain penetration; condensation from poor ventilation. Treat the source, not just the symptom.

  5. 5

    Apply Waterproof Primer

Even if readings are borderline, apply a moisture-blocking primer before your topcoat for lasting results.

💡 9 Pro Colour & Painting Tips

Avoid the most common painting mistakes with these tips from our in-house colour experts.

🌤️

Lighting Matters Most

Natural daylight reveals a colour most accurately. Incandescent bulbs add warmth; fluorescent lights cast cooler tones. Always test swatches in your room at different times of day — morning, afternoon, and evening.

🎨

Test Swatches First

Paint an A3-size patch on the actual wall and live with it for 24–48 hours. Colours look dramatically different on a small chip versus an entire wall in varying light conditions.

🌡️

Warm vs. Cool Tones

Warm tones (reds, oranges, yellows) make rooms feel cosy and energetic — great for living rooms and kitchens. Cool tones (blues, greens, lavenders) create calm, spacious feels — ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms.

🖼️

Accent Wall Strategy

One bold accent wall transforms a room without overwhelming it. Choose the wall you see first when entering — typically opposite the door. Limit bold colours to 25% of the room's total wall area.

Finish Matters

Matte for ceilings and low-traffic rooms; Satin for bedrooms and hallways (easy to clean); Semi-Gloss for kitchens and bathrooms; Gloss for doors, trim and metal. Higher sheen = more durable but shows more imperfections.

🏠

Exterior Colour Rules

Light shades reflect heat and keep homes cooler — important in Indian climates. Avoid very dark colours for large exterior walls. Always use weather-resistant exterior-grade paint with UV protection.

🔢

The 60-30-10 Rule

Design professionals use this formula: 60% dominant colour (walls), 30% secondary colour (furniture/curtains), 10% accent colour (accessories/cushions). This creates balanced, professional-looking rooms.

🧪

Surface Prep is King

80% of a good paint job is preparation. Clean walls thoroughly, repair cracks, apply appropriate primer, and sand between coats. Skipping prep leads to peeling, blistering, and poor coverage.

💧

Humidity & Temperature

Paint in temperatures between 10°C and 35°C and humidity below 70%. Painting in extreme heat or cold, or during monsoon season without proper ventilation, causes poor adhesion and longer dry times.
